Neurogenesis occurs in two regions of the adult brain. Top-left - Olfactory bulb (OB) circuitry: Granule cells (GC) and periglomerular cells (PC) are added to the local circuit, while mitral cells (MC) and tufted cells (TC) do not experience neurogenesis. Top-center - Subventricular Zone (SVZ): Site of olfactory neural stem cell proliferation. 'B cells' (blue) slowly divide, occasionally giving rise to 'C cells' (green). These rapidly proliferate, becoming neuroblasts, or 'A cells' (red), which migrate to the olfactory bulb through the rostral migratory stream (RMS). Top-right - Hippocampus: Hippocampal neurogenesis occurs in the dentate gyrus (DG), which is the input structure to the hippocampal circuit. The dentate gyrus is the site of both stem cell proliferation as well as the ultimate location of the new neurons.
