Only a small sector of the azimuthally symmetric detector is shown, starting outwards from the LHC beam vacuum pipe. Typical signatures for various particles as measured in the different detector layers are illustrated, where solid lines represent directly measurable trajectories of charged particles, and dashed lines the straight-line trajectories of neutral particles leaving no direct signals in tracking detectors.
