Four possible states for the two-site hydrogen molecule. The configurations \(|{\rm i}\rangle\) and \(|{\rm ii}\rangle\) constitute the Heitler-London valence-band (VB) wave function. The configurations \(|{\rm iii}\rangle\) and \(|{\rm iv}\rangle\) correspond to a proton (\(H^+\)) next to a negatively charged hydrogen atom (\(H^-\)). In the Hund-Mulliken molecular-orbital (MO) wave function, all four configurations have the same probability.
