The slowness principle is based on the observation that visual elements, like the monkey, vary on a slow time scale (top), primary sensory signals, like single retinal receptor activities, vary on a fast time scale (bottom left), and the internal representation of the visual elements vary on a slow time scale again (bottom right). By extracting slowly varying features from the sensory signal one obtains a high-level representation of the visual elements.
