The 22-year Hale Cycle of solar activity as glimpsed in a five-year sequence of soft X-ray images from the Yohkoh satellite. The leftmost image is from late 1991, just after the peak of Solar Cycle 22, and the rightmost image from 1995 near solar minimum. This suffices to show the enormous range of activity associated with the magnetic fields involved in the formation of sunspots. There are many specific forms of activity visible in the images of this figure: active regions (sunspot groups), coronal holes, X-ray bright points, jets, arcades, flares, coronal streamers, filament channels, etc.
