Hubble space telescope image of the T Pyxidis, a recurrent nova that erupts every 12 - 50 years. T Pyx consists of a white dwarf star (white blob in the centre of the image) and a red giant companion star (not visible in the image) from which it accretes matter (mostly hydrogen). Also visible in the image is the gas and debris disc that formed from the ejecta. Credit: NASA, ESA, A. Crotts, J. Sokoloski, and H. Uthas (Columbia University), and S. Lawrence (Hofstra University)
