Figure 2: By reversing purple and orange wiggly contours of Fig. 1, the Mediterranean seacoasts (a) and the Gulf of Mexico (b) clearly emerge at once as figures, both illusory filled with the same orange tint as in Figure 1. What is figure and “visible” in Fig. 1 is background and “invisible” in Fig. 2. Pinna & Reeves (2006) defined “figurality effect” as the 3-D appearance of the watercolored object, its strong coloration with surface color attributes and its illumination appearance depicting the three dimensional shape.
