Figure 3: When the orange contours are replaced with purple ones, the Mediterranean seacoasts (a) and the Gulf of Mexico (b) still emerge but less strongly than in Figure 2 – the figure-ground organization can be reversed and the two geographical regions lose the coloration effect, the strong figurality and the bas-relief appearance of Figs. 1 and 2.
